X-Array for Record-Breaking '70s Musical
UK-based rental company APR has landed a lucrative contract to provide sound reinforcement for the latest UK tour of the hit theatre show "Oh! What a Night". APR’s Electro-Voice X-Array system, supplied via main contractor R2 Digital Productions Ltd, will be on the road until July, as the latest star Kid Creole takes the show to a new audience.
Oh! What a Night is an unashamedly escapist, high-energy, feel good show, combining comedy, romance, and stunningly choreographed versions of everybody's favorite disco hits. First conceived in 1997, it has proved to be one of the most successful and enduring touring theatre shows ever.
Performing the show’s 35 classic hits from the 70s, a cast of singers and dancers, all on wireless headset microphones, are working with 20 tracks of playback.
APR’s Matt Gunter has designed the sound system for the production, taking into account the diversity of the UK’s regional theatres. “Typically we will use 3x X-Array Xcn two-ways, with 2x Xb LF boxes per side, powered EV P3000 Precision Series amplifiers. In the majority of venues, the speakers are ground-stacked. In addition, 8x EV Xi-1152 cabinets serve as stage fills; in the bigger venues, we might fly these as front fills or in-fills if the house system isn’t up to the job.”
Matt Gunter has moved down the presets on the EV Xb LF cabinets to produce more bass, thus saving APR the need to truck separate subwoofers. “This has saved both budget and space; the PA is barely occupying a 45-footer, although the lighting guys seem to have no trouble filling it up!”
Gunter, his front-of-house engineer Tim Stephens, and radio systems man Matt Nunn, are delighted with the performance of the X-Array rig. “The PA has performed superbly over the first few dates of the tour,” says Gunter, who is nevertheless planning to boost the system with extra EV XLC cabinets for the dates near APR’s home town in the West Country, “to just show off because we can!”
