Shuttlesound’s “Big Day Out” set to be a regular event

Shuttlesound is promising to make an annual fixture out of its Big Day Out, a special one-day event for the UK’s pro-audio industry professionals which showcased the technology of Electro-Voice, Midas, and Klark-Teknik, alongside presentations from highly-qualified guest speakers from all aspects of the business.
More than 100 people made the trip to the centrally-located Ricoh Arena in Coventry, including visitors from as far away as Belfast and Glasgow, Wigan and the West Country. Sean Maxwell’s eight-person team from Shuttlesound was supported by an all-star cast of presenters including Bill Gelow, Head of Engineering for Electro-Voice, Joseph Plager, Head of Amplifier Development for Electro-Voice, Alex Cooper, Director of Console Development for Midas, and Shuttlesound’s own project design and support specialist David Howe.

With Midas’ flagship XL8 digital console at front-of-house, there were demos of all three line-array designs in EV’s Compact categories: XLC, XLD, and XLE. All three were flown from Trabes Lift towers, alongside a groundstack of XLD. Demo systems were powered by EV’s new Tour Grade amplifiers, and featured a range of subwoofer models. Shuttlesound’s Jason Kelly and David Howe, the production managers for the event, were assisted by Phil Jameson and Steve Galland from LeisureTech in Wigan, who dressed the room and provided lighting and projection.

“We’ve had a very successful debut,” said Shuttlesound Sales Director Sean Maxwell, “and I now feel confident we can make this a regular conference for existing and potential customers. We wanted to focus on all three of the brands that we distribute—Electro-Voice, Midas, and Klark Teknik—and to show the results of the investment by Bosch over the last two years; how that has borne fruit in terms of product design and availability, and customer service.”

Undoubtedly the star of the show was long-time Electro-Voice user Derrick Zieba, the sound designer who has masterminded large-scale EV systems for the BRITS, Party at the Palace, and the MTV Awards, amongst other special events. Having put the case for line-array systems, Zieba went on to explain why he chooses EV’s X-Line system which, according to him, “really sounds like one big hi-fi system. Uniquely the subbass box is designed to fly, and that allows you to achieve fantastic low-end dispersion throughout the venue. From its very appearance, X-Line looks like it will deliver the goods; seeing these powerful full-frequency boxes gives artists and managers a sense of psychological well-being!”

The Big Day Out also emphasised the growing success of Electro-Voice’s new compact line array designs. Sean Maxwell was able to announce new system purchases of XLD and/or XLE systems by APR Audio in Taunton, LeisureTech in Wigan, and FMX Rentals in Fenwick. Two new customers for the larger XLC system will be profiled next month.
